In this false color radio image, taken with the very large array (VLA) telescope in Socorro, New Mexico, dark blue represents the least intense and white the most intense radio emission. Clearly illustrated here are two important types of radio emission: thermal or black- body radiation, and nonthermal, synchrotron radiation. Here the thermal emission is from the planetΓÇÖs central disk; nonthermal radiation is from the crescent- shaped areas to either side of the disk and the bright band around the planetΓÇÖs equator. This radiation is emitted by electrons that are trapped by JupiterΓÇÖs tremendously strong magnetic field and move in spiral paths close to the speed of light.
